The business of being happy requires making a conscious choice. People think being happy will just happen to them someday, if only they do this or that right. But it doesn't - you have to choose it. You choose happiness, you don't wait for it to choose you.
Life is a barter of choice and consequences.

I find the question "Why are we here?" typically human. I'd suggest "Are we here?" would be the more logical choice.
If loneliness was a choice, what was the other option? To settle for second-best and try to be happy with that? And was that fair to the person you settled for?
